Cypriots Named European Champions in Getting Married

Marriage is a serious, life-long commitment, and thus the decision to get married is never an easy one, right?

Well, not necessarily, when we are talking about Cypriots!

According to the latest figures published recently by Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics authority, the Mediterranean island of Cyprus came first in marriages contracted in the entire EU in 2018.

More specifically, Cyprus recorded 7.8 marriages for every 1,000 residents, while the average for Europe was only 4.4!

Romania came in second in the marriage Olympics with 7.4 per thousand, and Lithuania was third, with a marriage rate of 7.0.

Greece stood exactly at the European Union’s average, along with the UK, with 4.4 married couples per 1,000 residents of the country.

The least favorable nation regarding marital life in the European Union was the tiny nation of Luxembourg, with a marriage rate of only 3.1.

Surprisingly enough, second from the very bottom was Italy, a country with deep Catholic traditions and an extremely strong family structure historically. Nonetheless, it looks like Italians are not nearly as keen as they once were to spend the rest of their lives in the married state.
