According to Greek news outlets, a boat carrying 16 migrants and refugees capsized in the sea twelve nautical miles east of Crete on Monday.

The Greek Coast Guard was alerted to the precarious situation after one of the passengers dialed 112, Europe’s emergency telephone number, and stated that the boat was sinking rapidly.

Currently, one frigate from the Greek Coast Guard, two boats for assistance, and one helicopter are scanning the sea to search for the 16 passengers of the boat.

Rough weather conditions, including strong winds measuring six-seven on the Beaufort scale, are making the research and retrieval mission more difficult for the Coast Guard.

They are currently conducting extensive searches for survivors.
